Number of People Receiving Social Benefits Up by 13.6% Y-o-Y in January

Bratislava, February 18 (TASR) - The number of people in Slovakia that are reliant on social allowances rose in January by 13.6 percent year-on-year to reach 181,990, the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Centre (UPSVaR) announced on Thursday.

In January alone, the state paid out as much as €22.44 million for social allowances. Most people receiving social allowances live in the districts with the highest unemployment rate - Rimavska Sobota, Revuca (both Banska Bystrica region) and Roznava (Kosice region). The highest unemployment rate in January was in Rimavska Sobota district - 33.58 percent, while the Slovak average stood at 12.89 percent.

In total, UPSVaR spent €92.19 million on various social allowances and benefits in January. Apart from unemployment and social allowances, this most prominently included family support benefits, which cost €52.21 million.
