Number and Amount of Transcations Carried out by Payment Cards Growing

Bratislava, February 17 (TASR) - A total of 5,080,145 payment cards were in circulation in Slovakia in 2009, which represents a reduction of 175,000 when compared to 2008.

Although the number of cards fell, the number and value of transactions carried out via payment cards rose year-on-year, with more than 178 million transactions worth a total of €13 billion.

As many as 79 percent of the cards in circulation in 2009 were debit cards, while the number of credit cards fell by 20 percent year-on-year. According to managing director of the Slovak Banking Association (SBA) Ladislav Uncovsky, this was mainly caused by the economic crisis, with clients tending to assess the cost of financial transactions more carefully.

The number of POS (point of sale) terminals in Slovakia reached around 35,500 last year, which represents a 12-percent increase y-o-y. The number of transactions carried out at POS terminals rose by 30 percent, while the value of payments carried out in this way exceeded €3 billion, representing 11-percent growth. The average value per payment via POS terminals fell by 15 percent y-o-y to €37.61, however.

A total of 86.84 million withdrawals worth €10 billion were carried at 2,310 cashpoints in Slovakia last year. The average amount per withdrawal rose by €2.61 to €115.
