Madrid, February 17 (TASR) - Parliamentary Foreign Committee lawmakers visiting Spain this week meet their counterparts at the Congress of Deputies, Parliament's lower house on Wednesday to familiarise themselves with the priorities of Spain as the European Union presidency, including the Western Balkans and the global recession.
Slovak Ambassador to Spain Jan Skoda told TASR that part of the discussions concerning the Western Balkans included Kosovo, whose unilateral proclamation independence two years was not recognised by either country. Juraj Horvath, who heads the delegation of Slovak parliamentarians, offered to co-operate more closely on this issue, referring to the wide diplomatic experience of Slovaks in the area.
The Slovaks, for their part, said they would like to tap in to Spanish political, historical and economic experience in Latin America and were promised assistance to that effect.
As well, the Spaniards asked about Slovakia's take on the developments in Ukraine, which has had its recent election results challenged, and Belarus, which borders three (Poland, Latvia and Lithuania) states but does aspire to EU membership.
Slovakia MPs Pavol Hrusovsky (KDH) and Zdenka Kramplova (Independent) quizzed the Spaniards about their views on gender equality, the EU's relationship with Cuba and dealing with the ongoing crisis in Middle East.
Also as part of their three-day visit the committee members attended a Slovak embassy-hosted exhibition entitled "World Heritage in Slovakia" in Madrid, where they also met compatriots.
