Fico: No Plans to Introduce Toll for Private Cars

Bratislava, February 16 (TASR) - The Government isn't considering to introduce the road toll for private cars, Prime Minister Robert Fico said after the inspection at the Transport, Posts and Telecommunications Ministry on Tuesday.

The premier also announced that the prices of highway stickers for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes won't rise either. "It wouldn't be right to ask more money from the people until at least the basic highway network is constructed," said Fico, adding that the highway connection between Bratislava and Kosice should be completed in 2014. Originally, however, Fico had promised this route to be ready this year. He attributed the failure to complete the highway to the economic crisis.

At the same time, Fico announced that the road-toll system for lorries will be launched again within the next few days. [It was shelved in January, shortly after its introduction on New Year's Day, following massive protests by hauliers, who complained about serious flaws in the system - ed. note.] Prior to the re-launch, however, Fico has scheduled a meeting with representatives of road hauliers next Monday.
