Labour Ministry Dismisses Charges Over Social Enterprises

Bratislava, February 15 (TASR) - The Smer-led Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family dismissed Opposition and ruling Coalition partners for criticising the Government's long-term projects aka social enterprises instead of discussing their objections directly with the ministry.

Critics charge that social, job-creation businesses are highly inefficient and wasteful of European Union funds. Minister Viera Tomanova had earmarked €24 million from EU funds to operate eight social enterprises which have so far employed some 350 people since their introduction in mid-2008.

Spokesman for the ministry Michal Stuska said that Slovakia draws European money from the European Social Fund based on the results of a standard audit conducted by the European Commission.

The ministry does not yet know last year's EC standard audit results but the Opposition has already seized the opportunity to go on politicising the social businesses issue via different forms of skulduggery.

Currently, social enterprises are under the microscope in Brussels and are being audited by the Slovak Finance Ministry with respect to their efficiency and efficacious use of state funds.
