Bratislava, February 15 (TASR) - People who are incarcerated, except for those convicted of extremely serious crimes, will be allowed to cast their votes in parliamentary and europarliamentary elections as of March 2010 following passage of the Elections Act amendment signed by President Ivan Gasparovic on Monday.
The amendment, which was passed by Parliament last week, is the aftermath of Constitutional Court verdict reached in February 2009 that declared the legislation denying convicts the right to vote unconstitutional.
According to the Constitutional Court, it's unacceptable to deny any citizen his or her democratic franchise without a serious public interest being at stake. Based on this verdict, prisoners already took part in European Parliament election in June 2009.
