Csaky: SDKU-DS Doesn't Deserve Label Of Problematic Party

Strongest opposition party SDKU-DS does not deserve the unidimensional label of a problematic party, said ethnic-Hungarian party SMK chairman Pal Csaky in the Slovak Television's (STV) politics show "O pat minut dvanast" (Five Minutes to Twelve) on Sunday, referring to the much-discussed shady financing of the party.
Csaky declared that SMK is against this topic being dragged into the Parliament, since they do not see it as a "happy solution" to criminalise the House. In case of a possible extraordinary session of parliament, he sees the risk of an emerging brouhaha involving SDKU-DS and Smer-SD – one that will not have a victor. He thinks the efforts to bring this issue before Parliament is politically motivated, and he thinks it could be so off-putting as to discourage voters from going to the polls on June 12.
On the other hand, Csaky's discussion opponent - LS-HZDS chairman Vladimir Meciar - does not see any reason why an investigation committee shouldn't be set up because of SDKU-DS's financing, or why an extraordinary session dealing with this subject shouldn't be summoned. "For the first time in history there is proof that international money is involved, and for the first time the party reacts in such a way that it is making fools out of people and hiding the truth," said Meciar.
Meciar thinks the merging of the centre-right parties, as was the case earlier last week with OKS (Civic Conservative Party) and Most-Hid (meaning bridge in Slovak and Hungarian respectively), is currently an unrealistic project, noting that the parties do not have one single topic they can agree on. The situation surrounding the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party is a farce for him, since he considers SaS to be a disposable party.
As far as the surveys on political party support are concerned, Meciar said they are biased. LS-HZDS will strive for people's support so that it will be able to create a two-party coalition with Smer-DS after the parliamentary election. He did not want to predict who could possibly be a third coalition partner, since it will not be his party that "will deal the cards after the election".
Csaky is convinced that the extra-parliamentary parties will not be successful in the election and they will not make it to the parliament in June. He thinks the Opposition co-operation has not been prepared well and the mistake was done by those who underestimated the situation. He is convinced that the best governing coalition would consist of SMK, SDKU-DS and Christian Democratic Movement (KDH). "At the moment this sort of configuration is not very probable," he stated, explaining that it all depends on the election result of these three parties.
