Fico: I'll Address Social Enterprises After Meeting Tomanova

Bratislava, February 12 (TASR) - Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) on Friday rejected criticism by opposition Christian Democrat (KDH) chairman Jan Figel earlier in the day of the Government's social policies, and the so-called social enterprises in particular.

Figel said that taxpayers' money is being misused by the social enterprises, which were introduced by the Government as a tool for tackling Slovakia's long-term joblessness. The former euro-commissioner labelled the whole project 'another notice-board tender'. [The original notice-board tender was an open competition that was announced by the Slovak National Party/SNS-led Construction and Regional Development Ministry solely on a ministry notice-board. The tender was won by companies said to be close to SNS head Jan Slota - ed. note].

Fico said at a press conference at the Finance Ministry that he will address the issue of the social enterprises following a meeting with Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Minister Viera Tomanova, under whose remit the project falls.

"I wouldn't like to make any judgements and statements. If there are any technical problems within the social enterprises, we'll deal with them," said Fico.

At the same time, the premier hit back at KDH. "For eight years when they were in government, they were talking about the family. They were showing us various storks [the symbol used by KDH in the election campaign in 2006 - ed. note]. Look back, please. What did they do for the family?" asked Fico.
