Bratislava, February 12 (TASR) - Following an inspection at the Finance Ministry on Friday, Prime Minister and Smer-SD Chairman Robert Fico suggested that he may leave minister Jan Pociatek in his post for another term if Smer forms a new government after the June 12 election.
According to Fico, Pociatek has handled his responsibilities correctly over the past four years. "The most important goals have been achieved," said the premier, pointing out that Slovakia's public debt stands at 40 percent of GDP, which is half the average for European Union countries.
In addition, the Finance Ministry will have to be invested with new powers as far as financing the state's social priorities are concerned. "The crisis has revealed that finance ministries need to play a more important role than now. In some places they're treated as nothing more than cash registers," he said.
