Analyst: Cutting-off of EU Money Would Halt Slovakia's Growth in 2010

Bratislava, February 12 (TASR) - If the money flowing from eurofunds that is aimed at constructing infrastructure in Slovakia is cut off due to the discord between Slovak legislation and EU laws, this could crush any expectations of economic growth in Slovakia in 2010, TASR was told by Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) analyst Viliam Palenik on Friday.

The changes in the Law on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) that were introduced in 2007, restricting the general public's say in decision-making, were designed by the Cabinet to accelerate the construction of road infrastructure. Palenik noted that even this acceleration wasn't enough, as only 6.6 percent of euromoney has been drawn instead of the projected 44 percent.

Speaking more generally, Palenik labelled the process of drawing eurofunds in Slovakia heavy-handed and not transparent enough. He pointed out that as of the end of January, Slovakia had drawn only 4.58 percent of the money allocated for the period 2007-13, which is roughly one-tenth of the resources that should have been derived.

The analyst further described the planned merger of two ministries - the Construction and Regional Development Ministry and Environment Ministry - as of July as too risky a venture with regard to the fluent drawing of eurofunds in the months immediately following the fusion, as these two ministries are largely responsible for this area.
