Fico: EU Countries Should Be Free to Decide How to Attain Growth

Brussels, February 11 (TASR-correspondent) - European Union countries should have freedom in deciding how they aim to attain their economic growth, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said following talks held within an informal EU summit in Brussels on Thursday.

"The European Union is confronted with unemployment that is unprecedented in this geographic area," said Fico following discussions on a new EU strategy on growth and jobs dubbed 'Europe 2020'.

The Slovak premier added that the plan is intended to help EU member states become more competitive vis-a-vis China, Japan and the U.S.A. He stressed, however, that countries should be able to decide for themselves how to make their economies more competitive.

Slovakia's path to attain this objective lies in the construction of motorways and in other public investments. "This is the recipe for Slovakia," he said.

As regards Greece's economic woes, Fico said that the bloc has agreed on joint action. "What matters is that the EU showed clear solidarity in that it's ready to undertake the necessary measures to preserve stability in eurozone countries, said Fico.
