Three State-run Rail Companies to Merge Into One in 2012

Bratislava, February 10 (TASR) - Slovakia's three state-owned rail carriers are slated to merge into one entity in 2012, as the Government at its session on Wednesday approved a legislative initiative on merging rail company ZSR, rail passenger transport company ZSSK and rail freight company ZSSK Cargo Slovakia into a single entity to be called Slovak Railways, TASR learnt on the same day.

"First, we have to look into comments made by the Anti-monopoly Office (PMU) and complete the financial details as required by the Finance Ministry. We will then be able to handle these comments when the respective act is being drafted," said Transport, Posts and Telecommunications Minister Lubomir Vazny.

The proposal for the merger should be submitted at a session of the Government by the end of May. The move is aimed at securing more effective management of the companies. Competition in the area of transport won't be affected by the merger, said Vazny.
