SaS to Run for Election on Its Own Due to SDKU's Uncertain Background

Bratislava, February 10 (TASR) - Non-parliamentary party Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), which, according to some pre-election polls, has a good chance of making it into Parliament, will run in the general election on June 12 on its own, SaS chairman Richard Sulik said at a press conference on Wednesday.
"We've come to the conclusion that if we want to be a party that is based on openness and clear relations, we shouldn't go into a (pre-election) coalition with SDKU-DS, in which relations are unresolved and whose treasurer refuses to answer important questions. It's possible that in terms of tactics, we could have gained more by joining a coalition, but sometimes it's important to do the right thing, and I'm personally convinced that we've done that with this decision. Moreover, there is information concerning further suspicions, so we don't want to be linked with this. The decision of the (party's) national assembly was made by seven votes to one," said Sulik after a session of SaS members.
"It's only possible to defeat (Premier) Mr. (Robert) Fico and his Coalition if this whole alliance and all opposition parties stand on solid ground. If somebody stands on rotten foundations, they don't have any chance of success, so on our part this responsible decision was partly about attracting voters for whom certain values such as morals and transparency still mean something," said Robert Mistrik from SaS.
SaS representatives refused to comment on whether the party would be willing to co-operate with SDKU-DS after the election.
