SDKU: SaS's Decision to Run Solo Is Unfair and Playing into Fico's Hands

Bratislava, February 10 (TASR) - The opposition SDKU-DS party on Wednesday heavily criticised Tuesday's decision of non-parliamentary party Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) to run on its own in the parliamentary elections in June.

According to SDKU, the decision may cause many centre-right votes to be wasted. SaS's approach is unfair to those who are unhappy with the current governing coalition composed of Smer-SD, Slovak National Party (SNS) and LS-HZDS, reads an SDKU statement provided to the media.

SDKU also said that SaS is playing into the hands of Smer-SD chair and Prime Minister Robert Fico, who isn't striving for purification of the Slovak political scene; rather, to weaken the real alternative to the current Government. SDKU therefore considers any talks about pre-election coalitions to be closed and it will run in the elections independently, reads the statement.

"We've come to the conclusion that if we want to be a party that is based on openness and clear relations, we shouldn't go into a (pre-election) coalition with SDKU-DS, in which relations are unresolved and whose treasurer refuses to answer important questions," SaS chairman Richard Sulik said earlier in the day in reference to the recent scandal over SDKU party funding. SaS representatives refused to comment on whether the party would be willing to co-operate with SDKU-DS after the election.
