Bugar: SaS Has Buried Chance to Create Viable Alternative to Fico

Bratislava, February 10 (TASR) - Through its decision not to join a possible broad rightist coalition, the non-parliamentary Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party buried an opportunity to create a viable alternative to the Smer-SD-led government, chair of another non-parliamentary party Most-Hid Bela Bugar told TASR on Wednesday.
"We were convinced, me personally as well, that the broad coalition (SDKU-DS, SaS, Most-Hid and Civic Conservative Party/OKS) can be an alternative to Smer. The recent surveys also indicated that we would have been able to gain around 35 percent. It means that it would be a (viable) alternative and the effect (of uniting the parties) would have been synergetic," said Bugar.
"We saw a chance to attract people who wouldn't go out to vote. If anybody thinks that we have a chance to steal away many Smer sympathisers, they are in error. But (as a broad coalition) we would have been able to address those who say that it isn't worth it to vote. This was our goal," said the Most-Hid leader.
Bugar further predicted that SaS will at some point have to explain to its voters why it had said no to a two-party coalition with Most-Hid. He noted that SaS made this decision based only on the results of one public opinion survey, in which it received 9 percent. New parties often receive more percent in polls than they gain in the actual election, cautioned Bugar, adding that SaS may well find itself standing in front of Parliament's doors.
