Janis: Media Have Overblown SDKU's Talks with Rightist Parties

Bratislava, February 9 (TASR) - The media have overblown the informal talks of opposition SDKU-DS election leader hopefuls Ivan Miklos and Iveta Radicova with Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), Most-Hid and the Civic Conservative Party (OKS) regarding possible post-election cooperation, SDKU-DS caucus chairman Stanislav Janis told TASR on Tuesday.
"It's informal discussions about the view of SDKU-DS and other parties on opportunities for co-operation. The 'tell-all stories' by the media are not beneficial," said Janis, explaining that only the bodies of the one, second, or the third party can make the definite decisions. [The parliamentary elections are scheduled for June 12 - ed. note]
Janis doesn't rule out that his party will form a pre-election coalition or will adopt representatives of other parties onto its slate of candidates, but it also may happen that SDKU will feature solo.
"I believe that other rightist parties should also realise their responsibility to avoid the rightist votes getting wasted," said Janis.
"The Christian Democrats (KDH), for example, have no problem with it. They're going their way and they've no problem with the splintering of the right and the risk of the votes getting wasted," added Janis.
On the other hand, founders of new rightist parties that are on the risk of not getting into the Parliament should also realise that they are only weakening the Right as a whole, emphasised Janis.
It remains questionable, however, whether uniting parties into a large rightist coalition will also bring the desired synergetic effect. "A serious public opinion survey should be made. I don't dare to assess (the results), but I'm urging caution," added Janis.
