SMK Set to Draft Own Minority Language Law

Bratislava, February 8 (TASR) - The opposition Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) said on Monday that it would draft a bill on the use of ethnic-minority languages by the end of March and submit it to Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) High Commissioner for Minorities Knut Vollebaek, who is currently on a one day visit to Slovakia to discuss controversial minority-language issues.
SMK chairman Pal Csaky was speaking after a meeting between his parliamentary party and Vollebaek to discuss issues surrounding an amendment to the State Language Act that was adopted late last year and is viewed by representatives of the Hungarian minority as curtailing language rights.
SMK lawmaker Jozsef Berenyi, who chairs the parliamentary committee for human rights, nationalities and the status of women, said that Vollebaek pointed out the great imbalance between the use of minority and state languages, which Berenyi said must be dealt with.
The party intends its bill to carry more weight than the State Language Act.
