Bratislava, February 4 (TASR) - Both the Coalition and the Opposition on Thursday managed to team up in Parliament, passing the broadly-discussed bill on the origin of property disclosure with 112 votes into second reading and, at the same time, enabling legislation was passed (109 votes) entailing a constitutional amendment.
Among those who voted against the amendment of the Constitution were the Coalition MPs present from LS-HZDS and two SNS (Slovak National Party) MPs.
Prime Minister Robert Fico is the author of the proposed law, which differs from a similar bill submitted by KDH vice-chairman Daniel Lipsic that was given the thumbs down in Parliament earlier this week because it lacked specifics on its retroactivity.
Leaders of SNS and LS-HZDS Jan Slota and Vladimir Meciar, respectively - both known opponents of this legislation – were both absent for the vote.
Fico explained the need to adopt the law by saying that there is a public voice urging for such a measure to be taken, in order to allow relevant authorities and institutions to intervene in cases when somebody is under obvious suspicion of having gained part of his or her property illegally. According to Fico, over a long period of time the general public has been "traumatised" by such immoral cases - which cannot be dealt with legally at the moment.
