Tomanova: Only 15% of Applicants for Unemployment Benefits Successful

Bratislava, February 3 (TASR) - Only 15 percent of applicants for unemployment benefits are successful, said Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Minister Viera Tomanova after a Government session on Wednesday.

Currently, an unemployed person needs to have worked at least three years during last four years in order to be eligible for state allowance. "During times of economic growth, this wasn't problematic due to decreasing unemployment rate. There was no need to address this issue until about April 2008," said Tomanova, adding that the onset of the global economic and financial crisis has exacerbated the situation.

Last year, Tomanova promoted to loosen up the requirements for unemployment benefits. The proposal drawn up by the Ministry was to grant allowance to people who worked two years during last three years. "At any rate, I'm for loosening up the requirements. If the social partners (the government-business-labour tripartite) concur on this and reach an agreement, then that's good enough for me," said Tomanova.

She couldn't say when this change will be implemented, however. "That's up for a vote of the Government," she said, emphasising that she will primarily support job creation measures that will "give people good jobs - dignified jobs in terms of security, with well-deserved salaries, that is," added Tomanova.
