UNAS Stops its Strike But Transporters Still on Strike Alert

Bratislava, February 3 (TASR) - The Union of Slovak Road Hauliers (UNAS) has decided to stop its strike due to nation-wide police intervention against the lorry drivers, Jaroslav Polacek from UNAS said in a written statement addressed to media on Wednesday. However, UNAS hasn't said its last word yet and stays on strike alert. "The fight for our rights and against this scandalous road-toll is far from over. Our next course of action will depend on how Thursday's meeting with Prime Minister Robert Fico goes," said Polacek.

The yet-unregistered UNAS plans to file a lawsuit over the police intervention, during which many lorry drivers saw their driving licences revoked and were fined. Furthermore, UNAS intends to sue the electronic road-toll provider SkyToll over the dysfunctional toll collection system. The transporters are willing to go all the way to the European Court for Human Rights in Strasbourg.

Premier Fico thanked police on Tuesday (February 2) for keeping the roads passable during the UNAS strike. "Maybe I'm doing this at a time when we might learn that some individual policeman (allusion is to last month's fiasco involving a policeman forgetting about the explosives he had planted on an unwitting Slovak citizen during a routine security systems check - ed. note) made a mistake ... However, the police in Slovakia deserve thanks for keeping the roads open," said Fico.

The transporters demand that only 333 kilometres of first-class roads be tolled - instead of the current 1,500 km. They also request the toll collection to be stopped until this change is introduced.
