Vazny: The Public Will Have Input into Motorway Construction

Bratislava, February 3 (TASR) - Slovakia won't lose money from eurofunds for construction of motorways if it includes a directive of the European Commission (EC) on public participation in construction proceedings into the law on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Transport Minister Lubomir Vazny said at a press conference on Wednesday.
"According to the law on EIA valid since 2009, every civic initiative or civic association are not merely 'present subjects' but rather 'participants' in the proceedings with relatively broad rights in construction proceedings," said Vazny.
The EC has asked Slovakia to include the public into EIA legislation, which will also involve civic associations and initiatives and environmental organisations.
"We're working on this. An extraordinary session of the Government is to be held on Friday," said Vazny. He suggests the amendment will be approved and should subsequently be passed in Parliament in a fast-track proceeding.
Vazny said he's confident that the February 15 deadline set by the EC will be met.
