President Calls On Matica Slovenska to Engage Minorities in Dialogue

Bratislava, February 3 (TASR) - Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic met with representatives of the cultural institution Matica Slovenska on Wednesday, TASR learned from Gasparovic's spokesman Marek Trubac on the same day.

Gasparovic called on Matica Slovenska to engage individual national minorities in more intensive dialogue, for the sake of good co-existence. "We informed the president that we are maintaining active co-operation with national minorities on the regional level. We need to improve this a little on the national level though, and that's the task we set out for ourselves in 2010," Matica Slovenska Chairman Jozef Markus told TASR.

He also added that Matica Slovenska is keen on establishing the world version of the organisation - Svetova Matica Slovenska. "In this, we are following the lead of Jozef Ciger Hronsky (Slovak writer who moved over to Argentina after WWII to found a foreign branch of the organisation - ed. note)," said Markus.

The President also discussed the necessity to increase the support of Ukrainian Slovaks living in Uzhgorod. "We need to ensure that their education in the Slovak language goes smoothly," said Gasparovic, who is convinced that the foreign Slovaks deserve attention not only from the state but Matica Slovenska as well in order to maintain their traditions.
