Bratislava, November 24 (TASR) - Relations between Slovakia and the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis are intensifying, Slovak Foreign Ministry spokesman Peter Stano told TASR on Tuesday.
Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak met Premier of the Caribbean-island confederation Denzil Llewellyn Douglas on Tuesday.
"We've established diplomatic ties quite late, but have intensified our co-operation all the faster due to this," said Lajcak in reference to the fact that the two countries set up diplomatic contacts only in September 2008. The meeting on Tuesday came exactly two months after the first talks between the partners were held in New York.
Premier Douglas told Lajcak at the time about his country's interest in opening an embassy in Bratislava. "Slovakia has undergone a dynamic changeover and the path that it has gone through makes the country attractive to us. Our country is also undergoing a transformation process and we want to extend our contacts with the world," said Douglas.
Minister Lajcak reiterated Slovakia's willingness to help the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis in its efforts. The island confederation was originally built on sugarcane, but tourism and financial services now form the backbone of its economy.
