Fico: If Smer Loses in VUC Elections in Banska Bystrica It Will Be Unfair

Banska Bystrica, November 24 (TASR) - If Smer-SD's candidate for governor of Banska Bystrica Higher Territorial Unit (VUC) Vladimir Manka loses in the second round of the VUC elections on November 28, it will only be due to unfair practices, said Smer chairman and Prime Minister Robert Fico in Banska Bystrica on Tuesday.

Fico said that due to its concerns over possible vote-buying and other ways of influencing results, the party has formed its own monitoring teams in the districts of Brezno, Poltar, Detva, Rimavska Sobota and Revuca.

According to Fico, the Opposition lost everything in 2006, but instead of engaging in self-reflection has come up with senseless and unbelievable accusations against Smer. "If somebody isn't able to take a defeat they shouldn't be in politics," he said.

Fico thinks that Manka's candidacy for the post of governor was the correct move, and that this was proven in the first round of the VUC elections. He is now supported by 11 parties and movements.

Manka is running in the second round against SDKU-DS candidate Jozef Mikus. According to him, his advantage over Mikus lies in the fact that he is an MEP, meaning that he will have better access to drawing EU Funds for the region.

When asked whether he would be able to carry out both jobs at the same time, Manka replied that he used to be mayor of Zvolen while an MP at the same time, which was beneficial for Zvolen. He also pointed to a number of MEPs from various countries who also hold posts in their home countries.
