Fico: SPF Can't Operate If Opposition Doesn't Propose Representatives

Bratislava, February 2 (TASR) - If the opposition parties don't nominate their representatives for the Slovak Land Fund (SPF) Council, which they are currently refusing to do, they will prevent it from functioning, said Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico after the Coalition Council session on Tuesday.

The election of all 11 members of the SPF council should be included on parliamentary agenda for the upcoming session starting on Tuesday afternoon.

Six members of the SPF council are nominated by the Government, and the remaining five by the parliamentary agricultural committee. Of these five members, three are representatives of the governing Coalition, while the remaining two posts can be occupied by opposition candidates. All 11 nominated candidates have to be elected by Parliament.

According to Fico, the SPF council has to be complete in order to function.

"The Opposition has to submit proposals, it has to have some control over this body. If it doesn't do so, it prevents the SPF Council from functioning. We'll then send all the people who won't be dealt with concerning their restitutions or those who are dependent on SPF's decisions to the Opposition," said Fico.

Parliament dismissed the six members of the SPF Council who were nominated by the Government and another three nominated by Parliament early in December. The other two representatives who represented the Opposition in the 11-strong Council had resigned their posts earlier.

Prior to this, the Government dismissed SPF general director Miroslav Mihalik (a Smer-SD nominee) and his deputy Adrian Sandorcin (LS-HZDS) in the wake of a scandal concerning the transfer of land in Velka Lomnica and Stara Lesna (both Presov region) to land restituents.
