Fico: SDKU Becoming Most Dangerous Party in Slovakia

Bratislava, February 2 (TASR) - The scandal involving money laundering by the opposition SDKU-DS party must be discussed in Parliament, Smer-SD head and Premier Robert Fico said after a Coalition Council session on Tuesday.

Fico noted that the chiefs of the other two coalition parties (Jan Slota - Slovak National Party/SNS and Vladimir Meciar - LS-HZDS) both concur. He added that the public will learn later about how and when the topic will be discussed in the House.

"Parliament has to deal with this, as it's in charge of inspecting party funding. We'll expect SDKU-DS, which is becoming the most dangerous party when it comes to threatening the Slovak political system, to explain what was happening in its structures between 2004-05, and how it will guarantee that it won't use dirty money in the contest into which we're all going [the parliamentary elections scheduled for June 12 - ed. note]," said Fico.

The premier went on to say that SDKU has plenty of dirty money from the privatisation of strategic enterprises [such as gas and electricity utilities - ed. note].

The leaders of the coalition parties also agreed that "nothing will change with Dzurinda's empty gesture," after SDKU chairman Mikulas Dzurinda withdrew from the SDKU candidate list for the parliamentary elections on Monday.

At the same time, Fico reported that the Coalition agreed on a joint course of action at the parliamentary session that is due to begin later on Tuesday. "It has been confirmed that mutual relations between us are stable and the Coalition guarantees that it will see out its term, with Parliament and the Government running in a normal way," stated Fico.
