Fico: Sometimes I Fear Being Shot

Bratislava, February 2 (TASR) - Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Tuesday that he is sometimes afraid of the possibility of being shot in connection with the information that he has obtained concerning the scandalous financing of opposition party SDKU-DS.

"Such amounts were in the game," said Fico in response to a reporter's question as to why he can't publish all the information he has at his disposal at one single news conference.

"We're being informed gradually, and we're still being given hints," said Fico (Smer-SD) after a meeting with his coalition partners Jan Slota (SNS) and Vladimir Meciar (LS-HZDS).

Commenting on why the case of HZDS accepting a financial gift brought to its headquarters in a plastic bag, for example, was not brought onto the floor of Parliament at the time, the premier said that the Coalition is held accountable for its executive faults. "We've never claimed that our actions were flawless, and I drew serious conclusions," stressed Fico, pointing to his decision to deprive his coalition partner (SNS) of the Environment Ministry over the emission-quotas scandal.

What happened with SDKU [suspicions of money laundering and shady party financing - ed. note] has no precedent in Slovakia, said Fico, highlighting "the difference between flaws within executive power and drawing on dirty money in Slovakia's political system".

"There are people who don't want to see this, and these people are blind. And then, there are those incapable of seeing things. Choose the category that fits you," said Meciar, turning to a reporter who had asked why HZDS couldn't act in a similar way to SDKU leader Mikulas Dzurinda, who on Monday announced that he won't be included on the list of party candidates for the general election scheduled for June 12.
