Trnka Announces Investigation into SDKU-Funding, Confirms New Facts

Bratislava, February 2 (TASR) - Prosecutor-General Dobroslav Trnka said on Tuesday his office will, within a month, formally begin investigations into the funding of the SDKU-DS opposition party.

The announcement comes only days after facts linking the party to money-laundering practices have emerged.

SDKU-DS arch rival co-ruling Smer-SD has now also publicised information on the privatisation at below-market price of Crowne Plaza, formerly Hotel Forum, under the previous administration of Mikulas Dzurinda, and promised to make public more lurid facts.

Answering journalists' questions, Trnka further confirmed that mafia boss Jozef Svoboda may be linked to the Crowne Plaza deal but stopped short of linking the deal to Svoboda's murder in 2004.

Trnka said he had sent out requests to his counterpart offices in Switzerland, Great Britain and the Cayman Islands and SDKU-DS for supplementary information in the case, which includes foreign registered fictitious firms.
