Mecar: Neither I Nor University Management Will Resign

Trencin, November 24 (TASR) - Neither I nor the top management of Alexander Dubcek University in Trencin intend to resign from our posts, the university's rector Miroslav Mecar told journalists on Monday.
Mecar was speaking in reaction to a call from former education minister Peter Ponicky (April-October 2002) and lecturer at the Mechatronics School for him to resign from his post. A petition has been launched at the university on Tuesday in support of this.
The university has been accused of awarding degrees to students who have only completed a short period of study. Education Minister Jan Mikolaj has already suspended the university's right to grant bachelor degrees in Human Resources and Personal Management following an investigation.
According to dean of the university Dusan Maga, everyone, including employees of the university and outsiders, can support the petition.
The university's management views Ponicky's call as improper. "We're not aware of making a mistake. This management has set out on a journey and we want to finish it. This isn't about posts. It's a question of a programme ... First of all it's necessary to tidy up the Mechatronics School," said Mecar.
Mecar claims that Maga submitted a proposal for his dismissal because the lecturer is partly responsible for the problems at the Mechatronics School.
Vice-rector for strategy and development of the university Kristina Zgodavova said that she is surprised about activities of Ponicky, whom she claims she hardly even knows and from whom she has only received two messages at midnight in which he urged her to resign.
Mecar views the situation at the university as a result of the activities of certain groups who want to get into the management. Involving students in the matter could lead to a catastrophe, he thinks.
