Caplovic: Merger of Ministries Won't Lead to Exodus of Experts

Bratislava, February 1 (TASR) - The Government won't allow the exodus of experts that some people have claimed will follow the projected merger of the Environment and Agriculture Ministries, as "this would be a real step backwards and not a step towards the issues and meeting the goals of the EU's environmental policy," Deputy Prime Minister and former acting Environment Minister Dusan Caplovic said in a statement on Monday.

The statement was provided to TASR by Caplovic's spokesman Michal Kalinak following Caplovic's meeting with representatives of environmental NGOs Greenpeace and the Society for Sustainable Development in Slovakia, and environmental platform Ekoforum.

A new agriculture, environment and regional development ministry will be set up as of July 1, 2010. Caplovic said that he will urge the two ministries concerned to meet representatives of NGOs active in protecting the environment so that their views will be taken into account.

Greenepeace head Juraj Rizman has initiated a declaration by 35 environmental NGOs and over 80 ecology professionals rejecting the planned merger.
