Analyst: Dzurinda's Move Aimed at Curbing Fall in Voter Support

Bratislava, February 1 (TASR) - With his decision not to run in the upcoming general election, Opposition SDKU-DS party chairman Mikulas Dzurinda is aiming to curb a negative impact of the scandal involving SDKU's financing on the party, political analyst Grigorij Meseznikov told TASR on Monday.
Dzurinda announced earlier in the day that he won't be on the party slate in the upcoming general election. "The decisive stimulus for me was that I realised how monstrous a game (Prime Minister) Robert Fico is attempting to play," said the former two-time premier Dzurinda.
"He probably believes that his decision will at least prevent or curb a fall in voter support," said Meseznikov, and noted that Dzurinda is not backing away from politics as such. "He's still a party chairman and leads it," he added.
Political analyst Juraj Marusiak, for his part, said he was surprised by "how passively and humbly he (Dzurinda) was putting up with attacks by Prime Minister Robert Fico, and how fast he gave up his position of a leader for the election."
According to Marusiak, Dzurinda's move was partly due to pressure made by fellow Opposition parties, particularly Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party leader Richard Sulik, who strictly rejected Dzurinda's being no. 1 on a possible joint candidate list of SDKU and SaS.
A battle for the position of the Opposition leader will break out now, added Marusiak.
