Bratislava, February 1 (TASR) - Banska Bystrica District Court judge Jana Dubovcova said on Monday that she will run as an independent candidate for a parliamentary seat on the slate of the opposition SDKU-DS party in the general election in June.
Dubovcova was speaking at a news briefing after tendering her resignation from the bench to President Ivan Gasparovic earlier on Monday. She came to prominence as an open critic of what she called the poor conditions in Slovakia's judiciary, and the corruption and bribery therein in particular.
Along with other disaffected judges, she was often at odds with Supreme Court chief Stefan Harabin, who has been accused of persecuting those who have openly stood up against the status quo.
Accompanied by SDKU heavyweights, Dubovcova said that she chose this of all opposition parties as she found its plans for the judiciary to be closest to her idea of the working system.
SDKU chairman Mikulas Dzurinda refused to reveal Dubovcova's place on the slate except to say that she is included in the top six.
According to media reports in September 2009, DC Chief Justice Lubomir Busik instigated disciplinary proceedings against Dubovcova, threatening to disbar her for publicly criticising Harabin. Towards the end of the month a panel of judges at the Supreme Court discontinued proceedings against her.
