SOPK Polls Member Companies on Expectations for 2010

Bratislava, January 31 (TASR) - Slovak businessmen tend to expect stagnation, with slight recovery tendencies, in their business this year compared to 2009, according to a survey carried out by the Slovak Business and Industrial Chamber (SOPK) among its members at the end of 2009 and published recently.

When it comes to the legislative environment in Slovakia, the majority think the legislative conditions for business in Slovakia are unsatisfactory. About three quarters of the participating companies claim that frequent legislative changes are causing them problems.

More than half of the respondents think that the introduction of the euro in January 2009 has had a positive influence on the business environment in the country.

When it comes to the economic policies of the current Government during the last three years, 55 percent of businessmen spoke in negative terms (35 percent were neutral and 5 percent positive).

According to the survey, the group of five most significant business risks consists of the global economic crisis, high employment levy burden, clientelism and corruption, poor law enforcement and reduced foreign demand.

Concerning EU funds, the poll shows that the awareness about this agenda is improving and more businessmen are applying for the financial assistance. Three-quarters of them described the process as non-transparent, however.
