SDKU: Kalinak Misusing Police Corps for Political Goals

Bratislava, January 28 (TASR) - The opposition SDKU-DS party has received information that Interior Minister Robert Kalinak (Smer-SD) has secured the presence of members of police trade unions at a rally due to be held during a parliamentary no-confidence vote in him on Friday, SDKU MP Milan Hort told a press conference on Thursday.

By way of evidence, Hort read from a letter drawn up by police trade unions, which he claims has been placed on all notice-boards at district departments of the Police Corps. According to Hort, this is an unprecedented effort to politicise the Slovak Police Corps in the period since 1989.

"We appreciate police work in its day-to-day assignments. We'll also come to the defence of all honourable police officers, who form the overwhelming majority. We believe, though, that the Interior Minister is yet again showing his cowardly behaviour," added SDKU MP Martin Fedor, who also appeared at the press conference.

According to former defence minister Fedor, Kalinak should defend himself in Parliament vis-a-vis the scandal concerning explosives that were sent to Ireland in the luggage of an unsuspecting traveller and other issues, rather than organise demonstrations and "beg the police trade unions for help."
