First Group of Stranded Slovaks Transported From Machu Picchu

Bratislava/Lima, January 28 (TASR) – A group of Slovaks were among the tourists rescued after being stranded by floods near the Machu Picchu archaeological site in Peru since Sunday, director of the BUBO travel agency Lubos Fellner states on the agency's webpage on Thursday.

"Sixteen of our clients, seven women and nine men, have already been transported to Cuzco by helicopter. The group also included a couple from the Czech town of Kromeriz," reads Fellner’s statement. Another 23 Slovaks remain in a hotel in Aguas Calientes, but have good accommodation and are healthy.

The Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry said on Thursday that the stranded tourists should all be transported from Machu Picchu by Sunday if the weather and flying conditions are good. "The situation in Aguas Calientes is currently under the control of the Peruvian police and army, and the initial chaos has been replaced by the orderly transport of tourists based on age," Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Peter Stano told TASR.
