Internet Shopping in Slovakia Thriving Despite Crisis

Bratislava, January 27 (TASR) - Internet shopping reached better year-on-year results - despite the adverse effect the global crisis has on consumers, Slovak Association of Electronic Commerce (SAEC) executive director Jozef Dvorsky told TASR on Wednesday.

The rising popularity of internet shopping was evident in the revenues of internet retailers such as cetelem.sk, hej.sk, hop.sk, mall.sk, martinus.sk, obchodny-dom.sk and pelikan.sk, which saw their orders increase by 29.2 percent year-on-year in 2009.

A total turnover of the aforementioned internet retailers, all members of SAEC, reached €65.39 millions in 2009 - with 402,397 registered orders. The number of customers was growing at a faster rate than the value of products purchased and services rendered over the internet. This means that internet shopping in 2009 attracted new customers who appreciated lower prices (in comparison with regular shops) during the crisis.

Their cost-conscious behaviour, however, was evident also from the orders, as customers paid on average €207.95 per order in 2008 but only €162.50 per order in 2009.

In terms of product sales, 325,984 orders amounting to €36.49 million took place. The average sum paid per order was €111.94.

The turnover in services sector in the same year reached €28.90 millions with 76,413 orders. Y-o-y, this indicates growth in turnover by 11.5 percent and in the number of orders by 39.4 percent.

Forty-two certified internet shops are in operation in Slovakia at the moment.
