Cargo Shortens Working Hours, "It's Inevitable But Only Temporary"

Bratislava, January 26 (TASR) - Employees of freight railway company Cargo Slovakia will as of February work one shift less per week, TASR was told by Transport, Posts and Telecommunication Ministry spokesman Stanislav Jurikovic on Tuesday.
"This is one of the measures taken in connection with the ongoing global economic crisis. As transport volumes haven't reached the level that they were at before the crisis, Cargo needs to proceed in this way. This is for a temporary period," he stated.
According to Jurikovic, this decision is much better than making expert employees redundant. Finance Ministry spokesman Miroslav Smal agrees with this. "The situation on the railways ... hasn't been very positive for a long time," he told TASR.
Cargo's finances, along with those of passenger-services provider Slovak Railways (ZSK), were badly hit by the crisis last year. The Government therefore allocated €166 million for Cargo and €69.9 million for ZSK in March in the form of returnable financial assistance aimed at helping the companies to tackle the effects of the crisis.
