Mikolaj Stresses Need for New Professors at Universities

Bratislava, January 25 (TASR) - Education Minister Jan Mikolaj told TASR on Monday that he's certain that new professors who were appointed by President Ivan Gasparovic earlier in the day will provide "substantial help" in resolving the issue of a low number of guarantors of disciplines in Slovak colleges and universities.

Mikolaj was speaking following a ceremony in Bratislava on the same day in which a group of 49 academics, including Economy Minister Lubomir Jahnatek, received their diplomas as new professors from Gasparovic.

Mikolaj noted that there's a limit to the age of guarantors, who must be under 65 years old. "That is to say, several dozens of professors are retiring on the so-called pedagogic pension every year," said the minister. All the new professors are needed and have earned their degrees, he added.

"Wise, patient and diligent lecturers are highly needed at present," said Gasparovic in his address.

"By granting the professorial degree, our state expresses its respect for outstanding public life," said Gasparovic.

The newly-appointed professors in their speeches expressed their feelings of responsibility towards society and future generations. The new professors are active in various fields, and according to the Education Ministry, they have a good chance of "saving" certain universities that lack guarantors.

According to statistics, there are around 1,500 professors active at Slovak universities.
