Kubis: I Can't Comment on Background Information

Bratislava/Geneva, January 24 (TASR) - Slovak diplomat Jan Kubis, who currently holds the post of Executive Secretary of the United Nations (UN) Economic Commission for Europe, has refused to comment on the latest speculation that he is a hot candidate for another UN job - as the organisation's Special Representative to Afghanistan.

"I cannot, and I won't, comment on any background information," Kubis told TASR on Sunday. He added that his current mandate at the UN will expire in January 2011. Kubis, who is a former Slovak foreign minister, has been working as Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe since January 2009.

As Norwegian diplomat Kai Eide is leaving the post of UN special representative to Kabul, and his originally-nominated Swedish replacement Staffan de Mistura refused to take up the post, Kubis is now among the hottest candidates for the job, according to diplomatic sources cited by Reuters.

Kubis's diplomatic background includes, among others, the following posts: OSCE Secretary-General (1999-2005), EU Special Representative for Central Asia with the office in Brussels (2005-2006), and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Tajikistan (1998-1999).
