Kosice, January 22 (TASR) - Kosice Airport handled a total of 352,460 passengers on regular and charter flights in 2009, representing a year-on-year drop of 40 percent, TASR learnt on Friday.
The last five years have been highly successful for the airport, but in 2009 it was hit hard by the crisis and the troubles that eventually grounded SkyEurope Airlines, according to the airport's executive director Michal Hoeferer.
Despite worldwide negative developments in the area of air transport, the airport did manage to maintain its position and beef up the Kosice-Prague flights run by Czech Airlines.
According to Hoeferer, since SkyEurope went bust the number of passengers on the Kosice-Prague route has been rising considerably. As well, the airport has preserved the strategic character of its link to Vienna airport, and just as is the case with Prague, the airport in the Austrian capital is an important transfer link to all major world destinations.
In order to soften the impact of the crisis, the airport's management has held talks with current partners as well as new potential air carriers. As a result, a route to Milan was opened, added Hoeferer.
