Kukan: Fico's Words to Support Sefcovic Actually Had Opposite Effect

Bratislava, January 22 (TASR) - Performances such as that of Prime Minister Robert Fico at a press conference on Tuesday harms the interests of Slovakia, as well as designated Slovak EU Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, SDKU-DS vice-chair and MEP Eduard Kukan said on Friday.
"What he said was anti-Hungarian rhetoric. He didn't tell us what he did to support the Slovak candidate. I don't know why he hides it from the Slovak people. He really only limited himself to using the anti-Hungarian card and the kind of politicking that is aimed at obtaining a certain positive result among Slovak voters," said Kukan.
As to Sefcovic's candidacy for the post of EU Commissioner (for inter-institutional relations and administration), Kukan said that the Slovak candidate did well in the hearing thanks to his performance, silencing all his critics by his competence and persuasiveness. "It wasn't the thunderous presentation of the Slovak Premier but the performance of the Slovak candidate that was decisive in this context," stressed SDKU-DS MEP.
When it comes to SDKU-DS's role in this, the party behaved in a way it always does when Slovak interests are concerned. "In such a situation, we can use all our contacts that we have, we know how to use them efficiently, without any pompous gestures or banging on the table. We've managed it in this case as well," he noted, adding that SDKU-DS considers Sefcovic a qualified candidate who will certainly do a very good job as the future European Commission.
According to Kukan, the names of the new EU Commissioners could be firmed up on February 9.
