Bratislava, November 23 (TASR) - Not only Environment Minister Jozef Medved but also Prime Minister Robert Fico should attend the United Nation Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December, Slovak Climate Alliance co-ordinator Pavol Siroky said at a press conference on Monday.
According to Siroky, Slovakia should push for a decrease in emissions by 40 percent vis-a-vis the situation in 1990 by 2020, as well as a long-term plan for an 80-percent emission reduction by 2050. Also, Slovakia shouldn't block the EU plan to reduce emissions by 30 percent by 2020, said Siroky. Slovakia, along with the new EU-member countries and Germany, views a 20-percent reduction by 2020 as sufficient.
Siroky deems it to be necessary to set specific goals in support of renewable energy resources, which would represent 30 percent of primary energy resources in a country by 2030.
The conference will take place December 7-18, with ministers holding talks on the last two days. The conference is supposed to conclude the negotiation process and pass the final version of an international agreement between developed and developing countries to tackle global temperature increases.
Slovakia produces around 7-8 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per capita yearly. The global average stands at 6 tonnes per capita, while the EU average is at 11 tonnes per capita.
