Newly-Opened Turkish Honorary Consulate to Boost Trade Relations

Banska Bystrica, January 21 (TASR) - Turkey, which already has an embassy based in Bratislava, had the official opening of a Turkish Honorary Consulate in Banska Bystrica on Thursday.

The Consulate will cover Trnava, Trencin, Nitra and Zilina regions. Slovak businessman and Klub 500 Chairman and Podbrezova Ironworks General Director Vladimir Sotak appointed as the new Turkish Honorary Consul.

"By virtue of establishing this new post, communication with the Turkish side will become more effective. I could see myself in this position following my trip to Ankara with Slovak Premier (Robert Fico) in November and during the subsequent visit of Turkish President (Abdullah Gűl) here," said Sotak. He added that establishment of such posts can "significantly improve business", said Sotak of the Honorary Consul position, which he expects to be "a challenge".

"I'm glad that this Honorary Consul office has been opened," said Turkish ambassador Tunç Űđdűl, indicating that bolstering economic relations between Slovakia and Turkey is its primary goal.

Kosice is set to be the next Honorary Consul office on January 28. According to the Turkish Embassy, the volume of bilateral trade between Turkey and Slovakia has increased tenfold over the course of the last decade and has reached the €10-billion level. Turkey represents the 15th largest world economy, with foreign direct investments in Turkey rising to $18.2 billion last year.
