Opposition Fails in Attempt to Remove Minister Vazny

Bratislava, January 21 (TASR) - Transport Minister Lubomir Vazny (a Smer-SD nominee) will remain in his post even after the Opposition's attempt to oust him in a no-confidence vote on Wednesday night.

Only 50 MPs of the 120 present voted for Vazny's dismissal, while 76 votes were needed for the motion to be successful.

Leaders of coalition parties LS-HZDS and Slovak National Party (SNS) Vladimir Meciar and Jan Slota did not participate in the final vote. Out of LS-HZDS Mps only five were present - all of them voting against Vazny's dismissal - same as about the half of SNS MPs, taking part in the vote.

Opposition maintains that the originally promulgated equitable and social toll has, after its adoption, turned into a non-functioning and chaotic system charging fees to all but everything. Among grounds to remove Vazny they cite the confidential contracts signed with toll system operator SkyToll, non-functioning dashboard devices (OBU) or erroneous readings of toll measured by these dashboard devices.

Government is confident that Transport Minister Lubomir Vazny has performed his tasks well during the introduction of a new toll system so that Cabinet views the motion of opposition lawmakers to dismiss him as unwarranted, expedient and politically motivated.
