Gasparovic: Slovakia Supports Priorities of Spanish EU Presidency

Bratislava, January 20 (TASR) - According to Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic, Slovakia supports the priorities set by the current Spanish presidency of the EU.

For the first time in the EU's history, these have been prepared in view of next two presidencies, which will be held by Belgium and Hungary, said Gasparovic in Bratislava on Wednesday during a working lunch with ambassadors of EU countries to Slovakia.

Spain's presidency, which began on January 1 and will last until the end of June, is focused mainly on combating the negative effects of the global economic crisis, developing a social and civil-based Europe, as well as on the process of implementing the Lisbon Treaty.

"For all of us, dealing with the economic and social impacts of the crisis still remains the top priority. Job creation and sustaining social standards have to be our long-term goals," said the president.

Spain's priorities also include solidarity and equal opportunities. "I want to understand this as existing not only among individual EU citizens, but also among communities, regions, races, various social groups, and nations," said Gasparovic.
