Broken Promise Steals Show at Palm Springs With Standing Ovations

Palm Springs, January 20 (TASR) - The Slovak film 'Broken Promise' (2009) has received standing ovations from movie-goers at the Palm Springs film festival, with the movie screened three times.

Broken Promises, based on a true story from WWII and representing Slovakia at the Oscars, has been seen by more than 1,500 spectators at Palm Springs.

"We got two standing ovations. The first one at the end of the film and the second at the point when Martin finishes speaking. They had to chuck us out of the cinema, as the next film was about to start," TASR learned from Anna Trojakova, wife of Slovak Martin Friedmann-Petrasek, whose life story the successful co-production movie is based on. The presence of Friedmann-Petrasek at the festival significantly helped to promote the Slovak contribution to the Oscars. Viewers along with journalists flocked to get an interview with the main protagonist, who also appeared on a local TV channel.

"I think I've given Slovakia a good name. I've put it on the map and said that even though the hard times came to Slovakia with the fascist regime, many people still supported the uprising and worked to hide Jews," Friedmann-Petrasek told TASR.

The film's strong point has proven to be the narrative from the perspective of a then-naive young boy, literally isolated from his family just as open anti-semitism became the norm and WWII was about to break out.

Broken Promises is vying for the American Film Academy's prize in the Best Foreign Language Film category. According to some movie publicists, the film has a real chance of gaining a nomination.
