Bugar: Even If No Coalition Is Formed, We Can Get 8 percent In Election

Bratislava, January 19 (TASR) - The Most-Hid party isn't in principle opposed to forming a coalition for the parliamentary elections in June with any opposition party save the Ethnic-Hungarian SMK, Most-Hid chairman Bela Bugar told TASR on Monday.

However, if no alliance is formed, Most-Hid is ready to enter the elections on its own. "We feel that 8 percent could be achieved," said Bugar.

Bugar added that Most-Hid is holding talks with a number of opposition parties. "We're in negotiations with the Freedom and Solidarity party {SaS} and OKS, for instance," he claimed. He expects that 8 percent could be achieved if the party structures buck up and lead the election campaign "more intensively".

Most-Hid won't go in for any coalition with SMK, however. "There are personnel problems getting in the way. (SMK chairman) Mr. (Pal) Csaky and (vice-chairman) Mr. (Miklos) Duray are in favour of politics that don't benefit Hungarian people or Slovakia," said Bugar.

He added that SMK has ruled out the possibility of forming any coalition with Most-Hid. "They've completely excluded this. Chairman Csaky said that they reject any co-operation with Most-Hid even if this means not getting into Parliament."

Csaky said recently that former SMK members already regret leaving the party and want to return to the fold, SMK would consider each case individually. "We don't have such information, but we're used to Mr. Csaky misleading people all the time," said Bugar. According to him, more SMK members made the transition to Most-Hid as recently as last week.

A race to see who will have the most members isn't important though, thinks Bugar. "What we care about is whether any given member believes that a civil party operating on the basis of co-operation between Slovaks, Hungarians and other nationalities can be formed or not. And that's where a programme counts, not who says what," he emphasised.

As far as the parliamentary elections are concerned, the party is gearing up for battle. "We have a timetable set, have assigned tasks to districts and chosen a leader of the election team ... It's Bratislava party chairman Laszlo Solymos, who is putting a team together," said Bugar, adding that the candidate list will be drawn up at the end of February.
