Kalinak Grilled by MPs Concerning Explosives Incident

Bratislava, January 19 (TASR) - The incident in which an unsuspecting Slovak traveller flew to Ireland with explosives in his bag following a botched police training exercise was caused by an individual officer rather than the entire police system, Interior Minister Robert Kalinak told a group of MPs on Tuesday.

The man was arrested by the Irish authorities after arriving at his flat in Dublin. He was released following clarification from Slovakia.

Kalinak, citing the preliminary findings of the resulting probe, told the parliamentary defence and security committee that the man's bag wasn't opened, meaning that he didn't have his rights violated. The police officer placed the explosive specimen between bags, but it became entangled in the straps.

Opposition lawmakers responded by saying that this was still a violation of a citizen's rights, and almost of them agreed that Kalinak is misleading people. They proposed holding him responsible for the incident, but were outvoted by coalition members of the committee, which has accepted the minister's report.

Kalinak, who withheld from the committee details concerning the compensation that the Government intends to pay to the man, faces a no-confidence motion initiated by the opposition parliamentary parties within the next few days.
