Topvar to Close Down Brewery Plant in Topolcany in February 2010

Bratislava/Topolcany, November 20 (TASR) - The Pivovary Topvar breweries in Topolcany (Nitra region) announced on Friday that it intends to close down beer production in its plant located in the traditional brewing town of Topolcany at the end of February 2010, TASR learnt later in the day.

The move is mainly due to a long-term drop on the Slovak beer market, which has fallen by nearly 16 percent over the last five years.

The company will continue to produce beer in its plant in the town of Velky Saris (Presov region), which has sufficient capacities to cover the needs of the market. The plant in Topolcany will be used as a distribution and administration centre.

"The company will take care of staff who will be affected by the close-down in a fair manner, just as it takes care of all its staff," company spokesperson Drahomira Mandikova said in a statement.

"Topvar company would like to stress that it continues to be actively present on Slovak beer market and will continue to produce and offer top-quality beers to its consumers," she added.

A total of 19 percent out of a total of 900 employees of Topvar will be affected by the decision of the company management. According to Mandikova, the company will help them start their own business or land new jobs, with a personnel agency to be hired to this effect.
