Over 39,000 Cars Taken In Under Scrapyard Contribution

Bratislava, January 18 (TASR) - The Government's used car trade-in programme to boost new car sales, also known as the scrapyard contribution, saw 39,270 cars with an average age of 21 years scrapped last year in two rounds, new data from Slovakia's Automotive Industry Association (ZAP) revealed on Monday.

Skodas made up the biggest number of scrapped cars, while Renault was the brand most often purchased with the programme's subsidy, ahead of cars made by Skoda and Kia.

The most in demand models were the Renault Thalia, the Skoda Fabia 2 and the Kia cee'd.

"The scrapyard contribution helped renew the country's car fleet but had a paltry effect on its age," said Maria Novakova from ZAP.

According to the figures, 1.591 million cars with an average age of 11 years are being driven on Slovakia roads.

The Economy Ministry earmarked a total of €55.25 million in two rounds planned for 44,200 cars, but 4,930 people hadn't used their entitlement by the end of 2009 and the funds will be returned to state coffers.

The biggest number of vehicles were scrapped in Presov region. More than 54 percent of the owners of the scrapped cars were aged 50 and above.
